My number one tip for someone completely new to exercising; BONUS, this also works for getting back on track!
If you’re new to exercising and want to make it a habit, there’s one key tip that will set you up for success: start small and be consistent. It’s easy to get excited and jump into a challenging workout routine, but for most beginners, trying to do too much too soon can lead to burnout or even injury.
Instead, focus on building the habit first. Start with short, manageable sessions—maybe just 10-15 minutes a day. This keeps the process feeling doable, prevents overwhelming yourself, and helps you stay consistent. The goal is to show up every day, even if it’s just for a quick walk or a few minutes of stretching. Over time, as your body adapts and your confidence grows, you can gradually increase the intensity and duration.
I have used this approach more times than I can count to get BACK on track as well; you went on vacation, you or your kiddos have been sick, life turned upside down and your routine has fallen apart for what seems like an insurmountable eternity… Don’t panic. Start with something you CAN do. By “can do” I don’t just mean within your physical capability, I mean something that you can get your head around and ACTUALLY DO.
Even if it’s “just a walk” — while remembering there are people who would be grateful to walk. Even if you’re someone who is used to being in the gym but it just seems daunting to go back, this works for me every time. Set aside 15-20 minutes. Put on some music, podcast, or an audio book or call a friend or relative and get steppin’. Once you’ve started to feel the benefits of moving your body, you’ll likely increase the duration, you might run and walk…before you know it you’re back in the gym.
You could do this with light stretching or a yoga session. Start just by stretching from head to toe. Maybe find a guided session on YouTube. Before you know it, you’re back in the studio!
Consistency is the secret sauce. When exercising becomes a regular part of your routine, it turns into a habit rather than a chore. Celebrate each small win along the way, and remember: progress is progress, no matter how slow it feels. Stay consistent, and in time, exercise will feel like second nature.
