👉4kcal/gram of protein

👉4kcal/gram of carbohydrates

👉9kcal/gram of fat

Why is this helpful?

Knowing this is useful when calculating your macro splits and/or total calories for the day.

It is also good to know for identifying nutrient DENSE foods vs. nutrient deficient foods.

Lean sources of protein will have less fat content, and thus much fewer calories per serving.

Whole food sourced carbohydrates are a great source of energy and are foods you can eat in large volumes for fewer calories.

Although fats are vital for energy and hormone support, adding unregulated amounts of fat to your plate can be an easy way to consume more calories than you think you are (butter and oils for example).

A lot of heavily processed foods & fried foods will be nutrient deficient and/or have higher fat content– so they will have a lot of calories and little nutritional value.
